Man 'seriously injured' following incident at Teesworks site during work to demolish Redcar Power Station

One patient has been taken to hospital having reportedly suffered serious injuries as fire crew called to site

Emergency services have descended on the Teesworks site where one person has been 'seriously injured' after a fire broke out.

The North East Ambulance Service have confirmed they were called to reports of a person seriously injured at the Teesworks site, off Trunk Road, Redcar on Wednesday afternoon. An air ambulance landed at the scene and a male patient has been taken to James Cook University Hospital by road.

Cleveland Fire Brigade responded to the incident on Tuesday shortly after 4pm, however upon arriving at the scene, the fire was already out. They remained at the scene on stand-by where an air ambulance and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service were also on site attending to one casualty.

A spokesperson for the South Tees Development Corporation (STDC) said that they were alerted to an incident on the site by contractor Brown and Mason, which is within the company's control. They confirmed that two workers had been involved in an incident during work to demolish Redcar Power Station.

One patient has been taken to hospital after paramedics arrived at the scene. STDC said there was no wider risk to the public following the incident. It has also contacted the Health and Safety Executive.

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call to 999 at 3.22pm this afternoon to reports of a person seriously injured at SSI UK on Trunk Road in Redcar. We sent the air ambulance, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader and an emergency ambulance crew and took the male patient to James Cook hospital for further treatment."

Witnesses reported hearing sounds of alarms coming from the Teesworks site around the time of the incident. A Great North Air Ambulance helicopter was also spotted landing near to the scene by onlookers.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: "We are currently in attendance at 4.28pm on June 7 at an incident at the Teesworks freeport in Redcar. One fire engine in attendance from Redcar Fire Station. The fire was out on arrival, and we remain on standby. An air ambulance is in attendance and the casualty is in the hands of NEAS."

The extent of the casualty's injuries is not yet know but Teesside Live has contacted the North East Ambulance Service for comment.

An STDC spokesperson said: "Our immediate concerns are with the workers involved in this incident. We will work closely with Brown and Mason to support a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident - the safety of all site employees will always be our first priority.

"We would like to thank emergency services for their swift and professional response."

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "Our critical care team was activated at 3.43pm to reports of an industrial incident at the Teesworks site in Redcar. We had two doctors and a paramedic on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 3.59pm.

"Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient and they were taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service's road crew, accompanied by our team."

Teesside Live has also contacted Cleveland Police for further comment.
