TotalEnergies installs 100 fast-charging points in Rotterdam - electrive.com

TotalEnergies plans to install 100 fast-charging points at around 15 to 20 locations in Rotterdam over the next few years. The fast chargers are needed, among other things, for the introduction of the zero-emission zone in the Dutch metropolis next year.

The locations of the fast-charging stations are determined together with the city administration and the users of the fast-charging stations.  Potential customers were able to indicate their preferred locations in advance using a web tool developed by TotalEnergies.

The fast-charging stations are intended to supplement Rotterdam’s regular charging network. They ensure that electric car drivers can charge their vehicles in a short time and get them back on the road. Quirijn Oudshoorn, Project Manager Charging Infrastructure of the Municipality of Rotterdam, said: “Fast chargers are a good addition to Rotterdam’s charging network and an asset for electric drivers. With the introduction of the zero-emission zone and the growing number of electric vehicles in Rotterdam, demand for fast charging is increasing. Around 300 fast-charging poles are expected to be needed by 2025 and around 570 by 2030 for various target groups. We are working hard on this as a municipality and this is a nice step in that direction.”

The new fast chargers are primarily aimed at taxis, passenger vans and logistics companies that will be travelling a lot in the future zero-emission zone. One of the first locations where TotalEnergies has installed a new fast charger is the Erasmus Hospital in Rotterdam. John Samshuijzen from Erasmus Hospital says: “In early 2021, we started this project with the municipality of Rotterdam. With this, we are making a nice contribution to the sustainable transport of our patients and visitors to and from Erasmus MC.”

The French group TotalEnergies already operates a total of 18,000 charging points in the Netherlands. The high number is partly due to the fact that the company has held concessions for the installation and operation of up to 20,000 charging points in the provinces of Noord-Holland, Flevoland and Utrecht since 2020. In 2021, a mandate for a further 2,200 charging points in Amsterdam was added.

In the Netherlands and Germany, TotalEnergies is now concentrating on its charging stations and the development of a hydrogen infrastructure and has sold its petrol station network. It was sold at the end of 2023 for EUR 3.4 billion to the Canadian group Couche-Tard, which has primarily operated convenience stores to date. The petrol stations in Germany and the Netherlands will continue to operate under the TotalEnergies brand for as long as they are supplied with fuel by TotalEnergies – this will be the case for at least five years.
